G.A. Henty is a commendable writer of historical fiction, but his various works can at times suffer from "sameness," due to the format that he uses. But in "Colonel Thorndyke' s Secret" Mr. Henty throws out the rulebook and writes a story widely different from those you're used to.The story is set in the late 1700s to early 1800s England, or in other words, pre- industrialization. It follows the life of several diverse characters, such as a squire and also a highwayman.
Unlike most of G.A. Henty's novels this one tells both sides of the story between the protagonist and antagonist. Watch out! This story comes with several plot twists.
Some parts are easy to get bogged down in, but it's well worth finishing. I recommend that you do NOT read the foreword, as it's somewhat of a spoiler.

Colonel Thorndyke Secret G a Henty 9781491024805 Books Reviews
Another great story by G. A. Henty, totally different from his typical book. This is a detective story with a mystery plot that is thrilling. Five stars.
It was a very interesting read which kept you interested all the way right to the end of the book
It's not his best book, but it was still an exciting story.
I love old books like this. It's hard to "get into" the language of the day at first but the story is timeless and fun. The characters are interesting and I giggled a lot about the ladies having to rest so much.
Fantastic book, I would recommend this to anyone. The twist at the end was so shocking and I was surprised I did not see it coming, all.I kept saying to myself was " I cannot believe it, I cannot believe it!" Read it you will not be disappointed. Daniel
