A longstanding fashion in Britain, epitomized by Coronation Street and The Archers, turns the old idea of featuring stories of great people with noble minds on its head. Author Julian Cole is true to that approach. He excels with the minutiae of everyday working class life, and maintains his focus unwaveringly on detail from the beginning to the end. The cost of his doing this for some may be a growing desire not to be told quite so much. He should be defended--the book is not without action: The complexities of Debbie Brownlow's murder were skilfully handled, and there were several meaty sex scenes. I found the sincere public apology made by Maximilian before his murder very moving. There are some excellent turns of phrase throughout the book.The story bounced about from one set of characters to another too much for my liking, but the author justified the book's WWII title in making good use of the German Luftwaffe's raids in the spring of 1942. They were in reprisal for the Allies' attack on the submarine base at Lübeck, one of the cities of the old Hanseatic League. I was bombed in the Bath blitz, a similar raid, and his realistic descriptions are very well done.
The absence of personal names and erratic use of tense at the opening of the book are trying, and the total lack of paragraphs in a longish novel really frustrating. However, for those who like a good long read, with sex, and murder, and an attractive pregnant girl slipping off a roof, and a host of small personal dramas, sprinkled throughout, this book will while away a few good hours.

Such an interesting story. All over England (especially York). I coudn't leave it before finishing, it was like I was the author too. For all people who are interested in discovering British way of life and of thinking, read this book which is excellent. There are so many diffferent aspects inside, from British traditional point of view to multiculturalism. So a part of local history of England and understanding of how working class and middle classes changed since the end of WWII.
This story moves at a fast pace. The whole book is based in York and begins during WWII. It begins with an interesting insight into life during the war and focuses on young Tom Smithy. Soon the story moves into the present and doesn't Sam Pounder who works for the police have a busy time when the past and the present collide. A great cross section of characters are involved in the whodunnits! There are mysterious murders then Sam's brother, Rick (a private investigator) gets into trouble. There is so much to say about the twists and turns in this book but I wouldn't want to spoil the mysterious goings on. This story held me throughout, well done to this new author who has created a novel that will engage any reader.
