This was a very good, fast-paced read, especially if one enjoys Civil War historical accounts from a Confederate viewpoint. The setting was in North Carolina/Virginia, and the story line about secession versus loyalties to country showed a considerable amount of research. The characters were aptly drawn; however, I wanted to ask more of Catherine and Andrew, while wanting some redemption for James. A sequel from the other side would be excellent.Product details

Having read and enjoyed "The Secessionist" by John Frye, I was please to find that "The Scoundrel and the Spy" was now available in e Book format. I had actually read it previously as a real book. Frye takes on a topic that has a basis in the history of the Civil War about a Union spy in Richmond. He leads the tale through several twists and turns. The characters are nicely developed. Although I preferred "The Secessionist", "The Scoundrel and the Spy" is still a great read.
Imagine an idyllic afternoon spent having tea on the veranda, being charmed by a beautiful Southern woman who is gracious enough to flatter your every little point of pride and clever enough to know what they are. She seems warm, genuinely kind, part of a genteel way of life long since forgotten. Then, when the second pitcher of lemonade is slow in coming, she says "Why, I'd have that boy back in the fields quick as wink if this were my farm." Not even the sweetest, most delicate of ladies is bashful about slavery.
This is one scene of many in which the lovely, the foolish, and the barbaric combine to create a complex world peopled with unique individuals. They struggle with divided loyalties, poverty, disappointed fathers, ambition, and anxious romantic longings. They are real, and they create a time that you believe in completely. And when a spy scandal erupts, it is very hard not to be as anxious or as thrilled as the long ago people who lived these events.

Having just visited Gettysburg, this was a timely read. I can well imagine these types of things happened during the civil war.
All is very far from what is seems in John Frye's "The Scoundrel and the Spy" novel set in the Civil War era in Virginia. Intrigue, Confederate and Union loyalties, a glamorous woman spy, and romance captures your interest until the mystery is solved. Another great read.
Love historical fiction. The story was good but felt something was missing. A little dry in some places but overall interesting
It is great to see that this novel is now available as an e-book. As with "The Secessionist," Mr. Frye blends engaging characters with an intriguing plot to keep the reader turning pages. His thorough research gives the novel a wonderful backdrop for the story. You are taken back to the early days of the Civil War and introduced to characters trying to find a way to continue their lives as they also play their part in the war effort. With twists and surprises, the story is highly entertaining and will keep you wondering how it will all end.
I read the three civil war books, and I have to say I was pretty disappointed. Maybe I'm not used to reading men authors. The first one was so full of curse words, especially taking the Lord's name in vain, I just couldn't stand it, it was so pitiful! The last one, THE SCOUNDREL AND THE SPY, started out that way but didn't get too bad. The first one that was so full of curse words was, WITH GOD ON MY SIDE. A person would think that a book with that title would be pretty clean, wouldn't you? The SCOUNDREL AND THE SPY ended so abruptly, I felt like Alice In Wonderland falling down the hole! I was completely at a loss and I'm sure the author was also! He has to be looking for the words to end this story better! I've read hundreds of books and I've never seen a story end this way! Even if there was a sequel, and as far as I know, there isn't, the story STILL ended crazy. I could write more, but it wouldn't be in favor of the author, so I'll end this review now.
